Vaporiser tank - design and selection for your e-cigarette
Vaporiser tank guide: structure, coil change, purchase criteria and care. Which clearomiser is right for you? Discover suitable vape tanks in Switzerland now.
An atomiser tank is the heart of every e-cigarette: it holds the e-liquid, feeds it to the heating coil and ensures that the liquid is converted into aromatic vapour. Anyone buying a tank for the first time or looking to expand an existing setup will soon come across terms such as clearomizer, sub-ohm or MTL. In this guide, you’ll learn how a tank is constructed, what types are available and what you should look out for when buying and in everyday use – so that your next vape tank in Switzerland really suits your vaping style.
A vaporiser tank – often also called a clearomiser – is the component between the battery mod and the mouthpiece. It consists of a glass or plastic tank (usually with a capacity of 2–5 ml), a base with a 510 thread, a drip tip as the mouthpiece, and a replaceable atomiser head, known as the coil. The coil contains a heating coil and cotton wick, which absorbs the e-liquid and vaporises it when the battery is activated.
The term ‘clearomiser’ became established because the first transparent tanks made the e-liquid level visible. Today, many manufacturers use the terms tank, clearomiser and atomiser interchangeably. The tank should be distinguished from ready-made pod systems, where the tank and coil are often replaced as a single unit, as well as from rebuildable RTA/RDA atomisers, where you have to build the heating coil yourself. A classic e-cigarette tank with a replaceable coil strikes a balance between ease of use and long service life.
As soon as you press the fire button, the battery supplies power to the coil. The heating coil heats up to several hundred degrees in a fraction of a second, the saturated cotton releases e-liquid, and vapour is produced. At the same time, air flows through the airflow ring, carries the vapour with it and transports it to you via the drip tip.
MTL tanks for a draw like a cigarette
Mouth-to-lung tanks work with a tight draw and coils of around 1.0 ohms or higher. They are suitable for 10ml e-liquids with a higher nicotine content and low power settings of 10–20 watts. Beginners usually start with this type.
Sub-ohm tanks for plenty of vapour and flavour
Direct-to-lung tanks have coils under 1.0 ohms, large airflow openings and operate at 30–80 watts. They require short-fills with a high VG content and produce intense clouds of vapour.
A vape tank must be compatible with your mod, your e-liquid and your vaping style. These points will help you choose:
- Coil availability: Check whether suitable atomiser heads are permanently available. A cheap tank is of little use if you can no longer buy replacement coils after six months.
- Resistance and wattage range: The coil resistance (e.g. 0.15 Ω or 1.2 Ω) must match the power output of your mod. The recommended wattage range is stated on every coil.
- Capacity: 2 ml is sufficient for TPD-compliant entry-level tanks, whilst 4–5 ml is practical for frequent vapers. Consider the filling port – top-fill is significantly cleaner than bottom-fill.
- Airflow adjustment: Adjustable airflow allows you to use the same tank with a tighter draw for MTL or a more open draw for DTL.
- Material and build quality: Pyrex glass retains flavours better than plastic, whilst stainless steel threads last longer than coated versions.
Common mistake: Filling a sub-ohm tank with a 50-watt coil using high-nicotine MTL e-liquid – this causes a harsh throat hit and tastes burnt. Equally important: Let new coils soak for 5–10 minutes before taking your first puff, so that the cotton is fully saturated.
How long does a coil last in the tank?
Depending on the e-liquid and power setting, one to three weeks. Sweet, dark flavours shorten the lifespan, whilst clear fruit or menthol e-liquids extend it. If the taste becomes burnt or there is less vapour, it’s time to change the coil.
Can I screw any tank onto any battery mod?
Almost all modern tanks use the 510 thread and therefore fit most mod devices. But pay attention to the diameter: a 28 mm tank will stick out awkwardly on a slim entry-level mod.
What should I do if the tank is leaking?
Usually, the coil isn’t screwed in tightly enough, the seals are damaged, or the tank has been overfilled. Always leave a little air in the tank and check the O-rings when cleaning.
How do I clean a vape tank?
Take the tank apart, remove the coil and rinse all metal and glass parts with warm water. Allow to dry completely before reassembling. Once per coil change is sufficient for normal use.
A good atomiser tank determines whether you can truly enjoy the flavour, vapour production and draw. If you know your draw style – tight like a cigarette or open for dense clouds – you’ll make much better purchasing decisions. For beginners, it’s also worth taking a look at complete e-cigarette kits, where the tank and battery mod are already matched.
